Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

A game that got me into games. But I think this one has been crushed under the weight of its own expansions. I decided to start over with a big box and stay with a few key expansions. I haven't kept up with the spin-offs, but my favorite versions are The City and The Castle. I'm not sure there's much more I need from this franchise.

Opens up the game to player count higher than just 2 or 3 with the extra tiles allowing for completion of projects that otherwise would not be practical with the base game tiles only. Expansions are ok, with exception of the excellent Inns & Cathedrals and Traders and Builders (included).

I have not tried the 11 expansions that came with this giant box, but the original carcassonne is very fun. Well warranted longevity with this one. I've heard from big time carcassonne fans that two or three of the expansions are a must have. The other ones are fairly new. I was new to carcassonne so I binged and tried this. The box is big. Really big if you are short on shelf room, know this going in. Other than that absolute no brainer, great, great game.
