This War of Mine: The Board Game
45m - 120m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 18+
In Action Point (AP) Allowance System games, each player is allotted a certain amount of points per round. These points can be spent on available actions, until the player does not have enough remaining to "purchase" any more actions.
Action Point Allowance System
Co-operative play encourages or requires players to work together to beat the game.
Cooperative Play
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Games where you repeat an action (or part of an action) until you decide to stop due to increased (or not) risk of losing points or your turn.
Press your Luck
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

This War of Mine pitches players into a desperate situation; a city under siege, food and other supplies running short, and increasingly hostile neighbours to deal with. Members of our little group of characters may end up in a pool of blood or run off in desperation. A vividly written story book and a plethora of cards deliver shocks and occasional horrors. If the little band survives a while, a really strong narrative will build. I found playing TWoM as immersive an experience as I’ve had with cardboard and plastic. I do have some reservations. In future I’d play with a maximum of one other player. There just isn’t enough for more to do. The game’s method of scattering rules here and there in the story book is really unhelpful. There are decisions aplenty for players to take, but, as befits this setting, bad luck may kill your characters no matter how well you play. Many will find TWoM too distressing or too random. Although I admire its design, it isn’t a game I would choose to play often. The artwork conveys the desperate semi-ruined city really well. Production quality is good.

Great solo experience, with excellent storytelling behind it. It feels like multiplayer/co-op was forced. It's also very video-gamy in its mechanics. Lots of cards, lots of rules... most of the time (maybe all) you'll be playing with the rulebook open. There's not a whole lot of reference or Q&A. For singleplayer, there is a lot of replayability. For multiplayer (up to six?!!), most will be bored.
