Your friend’s mysterious disappearance results in the discovery of an unusual item, leading you to embark on a journey through time and memory. In this narrative puzzle adventure, an intimate coming-of-age story is told through an object that serves as a tarot deck, a puzzle game, and a work of art. You will need to manipulate cards, find hidden messages, and solve logic and word problems in order to uncover the deck’s secrets.
The tarot deck contains 78 cards–56 Minor Arcana and 22 Major Arcana, the latter of which each represent a puzzle. Puzzles are solved using sets of Minor Arcana cards and clues from the story booklet and result in solution keywords that lead players to discover new pieces of the narrative. Some story passages grant items which can be later used to unlock extra scenes, and some puzzles have multiple answers, allowing players to unlock more of the story if they find all the solutions.
Packed with gorgeous illustrations, resonant storytelling, and unique puzzles, The Light in the Mist can be played solo or cooperatively in a small group. It’s non-linear structure and varied puzzle difficulty will engage players of all experience levels with over five hours of gameplay. Do you have what it takes to overcome the challenges thrown your way without getting lost in the mist?

Backed this through Kickstarter and no regrets! We found the puzzles presented the perfect difficulty range: they were mostly solvable in about 15–30 mins with a few taking longer than an hour before we could finally crack them. There were a couple puzzles that we couldn’t get at all, but that’s kinda what I want in a game like this as it gives me a reason to come back after a while. The only small criticism I have is that the realistic fiction of the story and the dreamlike artwork - while both great separately - didn’t seem to fit together. Again, this is very minor and super subjective, and I still appreciated both of these facets of the game regardless. Of course, this is more of an activity than a game and won’t be for everyone, but if you are into puzzle-solving and immersive stories then I recommend giving it a go!

The Light in the Mist by @postcurious is a very beautiful puzzle game where you go on a journey to find a missing friend. In the game, you’ll go through a deck of cards, following the story in a handbook, as you solve puzzles. You’re trying to find key words that will be used to reference a list at the back of the book that will give you an entry to read, revealing more and more of your friend’s story. The game has a lot of mysterious puzzles that use a combination of different cards from the Minor and Major Arcana, with most of them being used for multiple puzzles. The puzzles are interesting and of varying difficulties. There is a website that you can head to that provides hints if you’re stuck so you can still continue on even if you can’t solve the clue. As you’re allowed to solve any card in whatever order you want, it does give you quite a bit of freedom but that comes at the cost of the narrative at times, especially if you don’t have a good memory. It’s fun to piece the different parts of the story together though so we can’t complain too much about that. And as you can see, the artwork is beautiful and feels really great too. We really appreciated the production value that went behind this game. One thing that stood out though is a core element of the game, which is the Tarot deck. While we are comfortable seeing it as a tool that ties into the story of the game, we know of some that may feel uncomfortable playing around with a deck like this due to the supernatural connotations. While we think it may help make it more accessible if it was an original deck with new names, we don’t blame the publisher or the fans for using an accurate Tarot deck. If you aren’t bothered by the theme and love puzzle games, then you should check out The Light in the Mist! Originally posted on https://www.instagram.com/p/CxS6su1yWkA/

Several hours of fun with well developed gameplay and eye catching art! Brings a new meaning to tarot cards as well.
