Eldritch Horror: Masks of Nyarlathotep is an expansion for Eldritch Horror, a cooperative boardgame for one to eight players where intrepid investigators must traverse the globe in an attempt to thwart the cataclysmic rise of an otherworldly Ancient One. Strange cults are gathering strength in remote corners and bustling cities all over the world. Though they seem to worship different gods, the investigators have found a thread that runs throughout all of the cultists’ horrific rites.

It's always nice to add more content to the game (items, characters, monsters...), but the new mechanics implemented (personal stories, ressources tokens...) tend to make the game unbalanced. It gives too much power to some characters in comparison to others (especially the new characters, who seem really broken) and adds too much randomness in the game. The game can go in every direction, and you can sometimes win it or lose it without being able to feel if your team is in a good or a bad position, which is not very enjoyable. Thus, each time we add it into the game, we have the feeling we are somehow "trolling" the game. Actually, I feel Eldritch Horror didn't need this.

+ More stuff! + Nyarlathotep! - Small-box content in a big box. - "Campaign mode" isn't—it's just six games in a row, rather than a coherent story arc. FFG's marketing gave the impression that "campaign mode" was a board game playthrough of the classic [rpgitem=46443]Masks of Nyarlathotep[/rpgitem] RPG adventure—both products have the same name, and they're shown side-by-side... Instead, the "campaign" is just—wait for it—six games in a row against six random Ancient Ones. [insert floppy clock painting here] I shouldn't have to cobble together a houseruled variant to get at what this should've been—that's what I'm paying you for, FFG. • This feels like... something happened during the design & production process and it got shoved out the door halfway done. It's a small-box amount of game rattling around in a too-empty big box—which leaves me wondering if this wasn't originally conceived as having a Masks campaign sideboard that got nixed somewhere along the way, but they were committed to a deadline so they just pulled half the stuff out at the last minute. I dunno. It's just... off.

Another great big box expansion for Eldritch Horror. I love new action of gathering resources - now investigator who can't move from space can spend his all actions. Also finally all new Old Ones from big box don't need additional board. All in all it is really fine addition to alreadxy great game. I strongly recommend it.
