Eldritch Horror: Masks of Nyarlathotep is an expansion for Eldritch Horror, a cooperative boardgame for one to eight players where intrepid investigators must traverse the globe in an attempt to thwart the cataclysmic rise of an otherworldly Ancient One. Strange cults are gathering strength in remote corners and bustling cities all over the world. Though they seem to worship different gods, the investigators have found a thread that runs throughout all of the cultists’ horrific rites.

7/30/18 - I'm very disappointed by the heavily marketed "campaign mode" which was a lie, or at least heavily misrepresented. The entire campaign mode is just a simple set of house rules that you don't even need this expansion to play. As summed up by one of the BGG reviews of this game, the rules are: "Don't reuse ancient ones, investigators stay dead, play with 2 prelude cards, do it 6 times." Wow, that's a shame. The concept had such potential. I'm also not really interested in the "personal stories" aspect of the game, but may mess around with them since I paid for them. Resources are a nice new addition, but again just like the campaign mode you don't need to buy this expansion to play with the new rule. Just find a suitable set of tokens to use as resources, and that's all you need. So basically, this purchase just provided me with the equivalent of about 1.5 small box EH expansions, for the price of 2. That sucks. I'm always glad to have more content for this game, but I wish I would have waited and not paid full MSRP in my excitement for a new big box expansion that ended up barely being more than a small box expansion. I'm knocking a couple of points off of my usual "9" rating for EH games, and giving this one a 7. I'm still glad I own it, but I feel misled by the marketing for it.

This expansion is clearly made for EH fans that already own everything released for EH or almost everything. I'm one of those people and I must say that this expansion feels more like a rip off than "reward" for loyal customers. I was always first there to "defend" FFG with their expansion model and pricing, because I think they always release top notch games/expansions with good overall quality of the components. They are always walking the fine line, we see them slip before with first expansion for MOM2 where they dropped the price after a backlash and here they do it again. This expansion added 2 new AOs, 7 new investigators and, like usual, new cards for each of the regular decks (items/spells/etc.). It must be noted that there are quite a few cards for Mystic Ruins deck which is rather nice. Let's talk about new gameplay stuff. Resources - Nothing special, somewhat similar to focus in scope, they are used to boost up your rest and acquire assets actions, good to have nothing mind blowing. I find focus addition similar in scope like I said, but little bit more impactful. Personal stories - Maybe bit biased here, but I don't find it specially original or exactly "new", since same stuff was added to the Arkham Horror board game so many years ago. I find them nice and they can shake up sometimes dynamic in your playing group when someone must decide between being more "selfish" and focusing on their goal instead of focusing on the current mystery/rumor/gates. Overall nothing special again. Campaign - Last but not least, campaign. I don't know if this is marketing's department fault or if it's designers' fault or even maybe our, players', fault. So called campaign is just rubbish. I'm pretty sure that ideas for "campaign" like that one could be found here on the board and that those topics have somewhere about 5 replies on it. It's essentially optional rules variant which could have been though off in one afternoon. There aren't any added components specifically made for campaign, there isn't anything special about it, if it came in the FFG's article one day as a free pdf page with rules I'm sure that few players would just say something like "Neat!" and that's it. But no, this was clearly marketed as a selling point of this expansion. When announcement was made, some big words were being said even mentioning Chaosium which works on Call Of Cthulhu FRP and cooperation with them. I'm pretty sure they were aware of that going on and instead of clearing that up, they were riding that train to the money town all the way. They published the article about campaign rules less than 10 days before release which was really suspicious, and even when they did you could see something was wrong. In one or two paragraphs of the article you can see all the rules for "campaign" variant, which says everything about that part of the expansion. I remember that a lot of people thought that this isn't everything and that they believed that till they got the game itself, but yea folks it's everything. I'll mention Arkham Horror again and say they released for free 2 pdfs with something similar to campaign for it, you can search for it on webs as Arkham Horror season 1/2 or check it out in files section of Arkham Horror here on BGG. For me personally it is 5 times more exciting than this variant for EH and it's free. So for me biggest selling point of the expansion is the lowest point of it, as the matter of fact is the lowest point of any FFG expansion I got to date and not just for EH but overall across all games I have from them and I have a lot.
