You feel it just below the surface. Something gnawing at the edges of society, an ancient being that could so easily erase the steady march of machines and concrete that have come to be recognized as progress in the modern world. Your visions show you a desolate future, where all that remains is dust, ash, and those who have long-slumbered.

I've been quietly playing and collecting FF's lovecraftian I.Ps since 2005 and I haven't seen a small-box expansion of this quality until now. Cities In Ruin should be the new golden standard to which future small-box expansions are compared. It feels thematically transformative as one would expect from a big-box with the smaller injection on new content. The design of the new mechanics harmonize and underscore the theatricality and story offered by the new mythos and encounters. Signs of Carcosa was to Cities in Ruin as At The Mountains of Madness was to Under the Pyramids; the imperfect harbinger before the release of a new pinnacle for the I.P. I'm sure I will have criticisms that arise from future play but my first impression was exciting and lasting. TLDR Excellent would highly recommend.

Devastation of cities adds a major new mechanism and can really mess with strategy - no clues on London, Tokyo gone...

I preordered from Cool Stuff. I know, I know. I gave this expansion a 10 and haven't yet played it. It sounds awesome! And given that I own every last expansion and that I thoroughly enjoy them all, my 10 rating is a safe one. It's being shipped to me now as we speak. In the highly unlikely event that the expansion sucks, I will change my score... Update: I read through the instructions and reviewed the mechanics. I also looked at just a few of the new decks to get an idea of the risk reward analysis to see if encountering the devastation deck is worth it if you are actually trying to optimize game play to win. What I love most about Edritch Horror is that it tends to reward optimized play (you're playing the odds and taking calculated risks), even with all of the random, brutal things that can happen to you. Life has random elements. So do sports. The beauty in all of it is the excitement involved in placing yourself in the best position to win. But the random elements are so brutal and unpredictable, the tension and apprehension that the game creates is just outstanding! You just mitigate the best way you can. And that's where your decisions come into play. And with all of the choices involved, none are arbitrary or just added for theme. There is a sound reason to do this or that or buy this or that or acquire this or that. So there is a reason to encounter this or that. There is a pretty sound risk/reward analysis to everything you do, including the encounters you make. I didn't want to spoil it for myself so I didn't look at every card. I looked at only three. I would say that the devastation deck encounters are more random than other encounters in terms of predicting what can happen. But the reward can also be extremely high. Yet, the risk can be brutally bad. All in all, I'm really digging this expansion and am eagerly looking forward to playing this weekend.
