Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Solid Pandemic style game. The dice add a twist, but nothing to go out of your way for, mechanically.
Hieken
The usual "Do your stuff then the baddies turn" kind of coop play. But the underlying system is interesting and the theme shines. There seems to be a bit too much bookkeeping involved, but it's interesting enough to be explored deeper. And it's difficult, more on the level of Ghost Stories than Pandemic.
Legomancer
The original (well, second edition) Bloc by Bloc is a fun co-op with a great theme that is hard as hell. Just utterly relentless, much like actually resisting an oppressive state. Still, I was eager to try out the third edition, and backed the "upgrade kit" which I guess at some point just turned into "get a whole damn copy of the third edition". The third edition doesn't deviate greatly from second edition, except where it sharply swings away, and that's in the win condition. Now there are goals, which involve liberating certain neighborhoods, that are revealed by -- and this is genuinely hilarious -- sending your comrades to meetings. The goals can sometimes be extremely difficult based on how the map plays out, especially when you have fewer than four players, which means some neighborhoods just flat out can't be liberated. The gameplay is similar other than that, with the difficulty level once again being solely determined by the number of "Heavy Reinforcements" cards shuffled into the Police Ops deck. While having more of these cards does indeed make the game harder, it's still kind of tough even with only one of them. As one player said, "this feels like a psyop designed to make you feel that it's useless and impossible to rise up." However, we did get a two-player victory the other day, so it is doable.
