Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Strongest part of this is the theming: it wears its politics on its sleeve, from the tiles to the cards to the components (best part: the "good guys" are colored cubes; the "bad guys" are white cubes). The mechanics have flaws that make the fully co-op game too easy (in particular, three barricades stops any bad things from happening, and it's far too easy to get three barricades up), so it's something that should probably be played semi co-op.

Just a bit too much randomness which coming from me says a lot. Random win condition plus random layout plus random dice outcomes that fuel your actions equals the potential for a lot of frustration that is completely out of your control. Add in quite a bit of fiddle and a boneheaded AI and you end up with a game I wanted to like more than I did. It's fine, there are just too many better options in the co-op space. The theme is what it is, you either love it or hate it.

The usual "Do your stuff then the baddies turn" kind of coop play. But the underlying system is interesting and the theme shines. There seems to be a bit too much bookkeeping involved, but it's interesting enough to be explored deeper. And it's difficult, more on the level of Ghost Stories than Pandemic.
