El Grande Big Box
90m - 90m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games that use the Memory mechanic require players to recall previous game events or information in order to reach an objective.
Memory
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

This was a Grail game for a reason, and now that I've got my copy I must say I am absolutely blown away by just how elegant this is. Deeply immersive area control with a flow that is slightly randomized by the card draws in the various Action decks. There's a lot of scoring, but it's all really simple and fun, and even after just a few rounds most players will pick up on the strategy. Plus you've got that added potential mystery of just what's in the Castillo. Count those cubes! A masterful game...one of the best Kramer co-designs. The Anniversary Expansion includes some Flags you can place under Caballeros to serve as Tie Breakers if you are so inclined. The Big Box overall is superb, an insane value, I could not be happier, with lots of expansion content that is actually worth using.

My husband loves area control and dudes on a map games. We recently played El Grande at a convention and he loves this game. Of all our area control/dudes on a map games this is the one I like the most. It is an older game with relatively simple mechanics, but also quite a bit to think about. I have enjoyed it and will enjoy the many future plays my husband will be requesting.

I've had this game a long time and just don't really play it. Nobody I've played it with has suggested to play it again. So, I enjoyed it but have a sort of neutral opinion of it
