Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Opens up the game to player count higher than just 2 or 3 with the extra tiles allowing for completion of projects that otherwise would not be practical with the base game tiles only. Expansions are ok, with exception of the excellent Inns & Cathedrals and Traders and Builders (included).

Most of the expansions are crap (imo). Stick with builders, inns, cathedrals, and uh.. whatever adds the big meeple, builder, priest, pig, farmer and the silk, beer, etc tokens. I ignore all of the other expansions. They make an already random game just a little too random for my taste.

Carcassonne should probably be sold only in this format. Allowing a large replayability and adaptatibility of the expected game complexity. Very good quality of the material. Yet, should not be played too much often to avoid any indigestion.
