The area control at the heart of this game is just not as thematic or interesting as the artwork & fossil pieces suggest. Too expensive for what it is ..

Realty good game with nice mechanics. Feel like a mix of Dominant species and Lord of the Ice garden. Which also was the reason I backed it. The AI is so and so and looking forward to playing this 4man next time.

This game has a great theme, beautiful art and mostly good components. The KS version comes with 'upgraded' bases that don't fit the figures and are worse than the base level token options. People we've talked to just use the base level tokens. Upsetting to pay extra for something that is lower quality but that's a minor gripe. This is a four player game. And at four players it's a great game. Truly. The area control tactics, asymmetric powers, deduction / bluffing track all work very well to create a balanced, competitive game. Each species truly has an equal chance to win. A minor critique would be that the adaptation card mechanic could change. Either a tableau that is drafted based on who passes first or pick 'x' cards and keep 2 could work better. But that really is minor - the four player game is great. An 8.5 at four players. The problem is with anything less than four. You have to play all four species and the AI for the non-player species is managed through dice. In other words that non-player may or may not mess with you, benefit someone else all in a manner that is completely random and doesn't mesh with any sort of strategic play. When playing at full player count you can better anticipate opponent moves, plan and react etc. The game is a 6.5 with less than four (imo). Honest marketing for the game would be to call it a 4 player game with variants for 1-3 players. This isn't to say it's a bad game. Wildcatters & Panamax are in the same class and both are great games (at 4 players). If you can play this game with four and you're into area control tactical games, then you'll adore this game. If you try to play with less it is still okay but loses A LOT. Overall we're happy with the purchase and will definitely keep Pangea on the shelf for when we have exactly 4 at game night.
