Description from the publisher:
Night is falling and your tamed critters have somehow escaped their enclosure! Head into the forest and tempt them back with juicy lightning bugs in Smile, a game of gathering cute creatures for three to five players.
In every game of Smile, you and your fellow players attempt to lure your critters back by taking turns placing fireflies on their cards one at a time. But be careful! Wild critters are equally enamored with your fireflies, but will give you negative points. Wisely spend your fireflies to attract the best critters while saving enough to bid in future rounds. Just remember: In the end, you’ll be surrounded by a collection of cute smiling creatures — for better or worse!

Nobody can deny that Atha Kanaani's artwork is gorgeous- so gorgeous that it actually is a significant driving force of the game. You just want to play through it and see all the wonderful critters, collect them, and keep the meaner ones away from the nicer ones! When it gets down to the gameplay, Smile is an enjoyable game that does feel kind of light and lucky. Designer Schacht uses his 'Mogul' mechanic to pass off taking a card until the value of the chips on the card influence you enough to take it. Sometimes you get lucky and take the card you wanted regardless, and gain a lot of chips (fireflies) in the process. Sometimes you're absolutely forced to take a card that can significantly impact your score for the worst, and that's a real shame. There is obviously control over when to take cards and what to avoid if possible, but sometimes you can't escape negative effects, which ironically doesn't make me smile. So in the end, it's a cute game and works well for what it is. I just don't think it might have much to revisit in the future and there are a host of other "fillers" I enjoy more after repeated plays.

Nice at 3, but suspect it comes into its own at 4-5. Need to ty it with those play counts. My daughters love the artwork - makes it a nice alternative fiiller to No thanks!

Fantastic! This is a better version of no thanks (just tweaking it to force people to play the right number of rounds makes it more strategic as it introduces decisions that are bad in the short term but good in the long term) that looks super engaging on the table. Plays in the perfect amount of time.
