Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

I may rate this higher if I give it another few goes. The best part of this game is that it's really difficult to fall very far behind unless lady luck just isn't on your side. Having the minis expansion is serious overkill, but in terms of the mechanics, I find it much more engaging than its sister, Among the Stars. That being said, I still find that the automatic turn order needs to be addressed as the ambassadors are quite powerful and I feel that when you have something on the board like that (in short, they allow you to do some extremely useful buffing actions or out-of-sequence stuff), you ought to have a turn-order bidding mechanic. Still, this is a pretty good game, but ultimately depends on some luck-based cards, like the orientation bonuses. When that VP bonus comes out, the whole game changes and that rubbed me a little wrong.

A great game that does not play like Among the Stars. Lots of little variations allow for good replayability and player combat is not necessary and can be made optional.

The most enjoyable game hours I spent for quite some time. The game has some minor balance issues, in my opinion, but nothing that's not reversible or definite. The best Artipia title so far.
