Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

If there is one thing I repeatedly argue about with the Other Player, it is the inability of certain board games to actually tell the story they are trying to sell. Well, here comes the King of all story telling games that all others will have to compare themselves to. Playing Tales is as beautiful as the eyes of Sheherazade, as exciting as a trip on Aladdins magic carpet, as mystical as the dark grove in Sindbads adventures. While playing, you can easily forget that it is indeed not a cooperative game. You may actually forget you're playing a board game. Tales is much more like a friendly introduction to role playing games. If there is on tiny thing I would wish for if a magical Genie turned up and asked me about my whishes, I would ... naturally speak to him about something entirely unrelated to board games. But if, say, the designer of Tales 2.0 climbed out of that lamp, I would probably ask him for a digital version of the story book, because shuffling through the pages all the time really gets annoying after a while. But really, this feels like complaining about the color of the fabric after someone gave you a flying carpet for Christmas.

Fantastic storytelling game. I give it a 10 because the rating says exactly how I feel. I always enjoy playing it. Are there a few weak points? Yes, but they don't detract a lot from the game. I always wished that there would be more made in other mythos.

Lowered ranking a bit. No specific game has replaced it for what it does, and its still a very fun game that I'm nearly always int eh mood for, just less likely to make an effort to get ti played these days.
