The small island of Kuchinoshima has been hit by a terrible storm, leaving the village with only a single fishing boat. Each hoping to prove themselves the village’s best fisherman, 2-4 players take turns moving the boat marker around the island, collecting any fish tiles they land upon. At the end of the day, the player with the best haul wins, but there’s a twist – with 3 or 4 players, each player’s score is added to the player to their right’s score before determining the winner!

02.2024 Tonari sits firmly in the genre of move in a grid to collect stuff for set-collection scoring. If you’ve seen one game like it, you pretty much know how Tonari plays. For me, the pinnacle of that set of games is Butterfly. I don’t think Tonari is anywhere near as good but it’s still a winsome little package. A couple things that separate it from the pack is Tonari is played on an ovular, hex grid with players moving the boat, the central piece to an adjacent tile. There are ways to force a player into taking a negative tile or move it so they set you up to get something you want. Some specialty tiles—remove a tile from the board; swap tiles on the board; swap tiles with an opponent; double the score for a certain type for everyone—add some fun twists that I haven’t encountered elsewhere but are dead easy to internalize. Because of the adjacency rule, it is easy for games to end super early so I see a lot of opportunity to have five-minute games if players aren’t paying close enough attention. But the 30-45 minute play time is crazy. This is a 15-minute game tops and that’s perfect for what it delivers.

A surprisingly, unique, thrilling, cooperative, competetive adventure. If this game set out as a 5-10 minute tense filler with great production... mission accomplished. I really enjoyed the implementation of the coop-compete model. If I have one complaint its the boat token.... cuuuuumon, a game like this deserves a "Boat".

Suspected that the game plays itself despite some positive reviews to the contrary. Actually playing it confirmed my suspicions. Lovely components though.
