Mage Wars: Forged In Fire
Expansion of:
Mage Wars Arena
2 - 2 Players
Ages 14+
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Nice expansion with great theme and needed buffs for some underpowered mages in the meta: Warlock, Warlord and spawnpoint dependent mages. Adramelech warlock is theme-wise great, in play very mediocre. But the spells that come with it give a much needed buff to the normal Warlock and even the Necromancer. The dwarven warlord is great though, much more solid as the regular one and the Walls of Steel are the first walls to really pack a punch in 'closing off' an area. This, combined with the very nice rune mechanic, makes the warlord a tad stronger than his hopelessly underpowered Orc colleague. As for spells, the Meditation Amulet is absolutely great. Can't say how amazed I am in the buff it gives to the Druid, Necro and Priestess (and all other defensive mages). I found that it is usually just too weak/insignificant for your opponent to burn a Dissolve on, but it generates so much mana for your spellpoints that it makes these mages so much more variable. Your opponent is giving you pause because of good defenses? Take the threat to him by taking the mana-lead. This basically forces your opponent to rush, which is usually just what you anticipate for anyway. But now at your tempo, which is great for a 'control' mage. My second favorite expansion (Druid vs Necro still being no 1).

The box itself is amazing and a major improvement over the kumanjaro spell tome. Hopefully this trend continues. hard solid case and comes with much needed space inside to hold more cards. Theme is awesome, my only complaint is that I feel like some of the artwork is not on par with what mage wars is. Like Talos and the generic looking holy soldier that came in this box, the few cards look almost abyssmal in comparison with beautiful cards such as devils pitchfork and the level one fire imp

Another nice expansion, which does a lot to bring the warlord up to par. Bringing this down to an 8 though, as it neglects to include an extra barracks for the new dwarf warlord, and doesn't address a couple of issues important to the conjuration building theme - including the goblin builder, which remains useless, a somewhat lackluster 'Otto master engineer card', and no way to speed the loading of siege machines. I'd be interested to be proved wrong. Also could have saved money with a cheaper box - this one was unnecessary bloat. And as usual, overpriced for UK buyers. Otherwise some nice additions to a great game.
