The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Spanish (DEVIR) edition. Wonderful edition, wonderful components, wonderful game. The rules seem long and dense, but once you start playing they are not hard to grasp and follow. Played with 3 players (two faction each) works perfect. May lose a bit in the diplomacy phase, but I guess it plays faster and each player gets double fun. It is not a 10 only because it is quite long and requires some multiplayer commintment, which hinders playability. But definitely it is one of the best games I have ever played.

Awesome game, really good history and a lot less complex to play than it seems at first glance. the only problem with it is it really does take all day to play. on the other hand the last time we played no-one even stopped for a drink for the first 4 hours because they were so engrossed in the game

Rulebook is missing a few clarifications or I'm just very bad at searching. Did help a lot by printing an index from BGG. Takes very long to play. Papacy, Protestant and Ottoman felt a bit one-dimensional in our game. The history through the deck is fantastic. We all liked the game even with a few shortcomings.
