Dominant Species: The Card Game
60m - 60m

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Light hand management game, but quite enjoyable. Sometimes, the best strategy is to immediately pass without playing any cards to a biome, especially in the early rounds which are worth fewer points. Then again, especially with higher player counts, it's important not to be left behind on the survival track.

It is not a bad game - might upgrade it after trying it with more than two players. Expecting it to be its big brother is probably unfair, but as a card game with a similar theme, it works quite well and has a fair amount of strategy to it.

Ok, it's not anywhere near DS the boardgame. Let's get over it. As a game itself, it's a pretty decent filler that takes about 45 mins for 3 players. In some way, at least this is not another poker hand set creating victory point collection game. It felt more like a push your luck and dare your opponent game that has some slight tactical twist, in a sense that you can get rid of certain cards and no gamer can just keep adding and adding without care or no tomorrow kind of extend. There is a point that I did not like about the game is the notion of playing everything in your hand on the last turn, be it useful or not. The player that draws more cards in the survival track will have the upper hand. The randomness of the draw could possibly make this gap between players even wider. For this point alone, I have drop the rating by a notch.
