Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Natronics
Ancients kick everyone's non-euclidean black holes. They're insanely powerful early, and extremely cheap to play, and their ability to score quickly is just barely outclassed by the near-game-breaking Tcho-Tchos. I think there presence is almost required, since they are one of only 3 factions that can be aggressive early (with Crawling Chaos & Great Cthulhu; others are very situational and likely sub-optimal). As someone that appreciates a cheap and powerful military, I will never turn down the chance to play this faction.

A neat faction that has a very different approach. They spread out but don't care about losing ground, since they still benefit if their cathedrals overlap with enemy gates. Their stuff gets cheaper and weaker when you upgrade it, shifting their power dynamic as the game progresses. It's really quite easy to complete their spellbooks, so I don't know how balance will play out. Maybe they are kept in check by a proper response or other asymmetries. It's fun to have a GOO sized monster roll 7 dice.

Ancients don't seem like an especially challenging faction to play, however, I found them quite enjoyable during my first play and am looking forward to exploring them more. Lots of opportunities for social engineering. They certainly play quite differently than the other factions, most notably with the absence of a great old one.
