Nothing special in my opinion. This expansion does not bring too much to the base game, it only makes the game easier and faster. I like very much the base game, I expecially appreciate the complexity to build a good resources engine and to carefully plan the strategy. With this expansion there is a "Fortune" phase, that usually involves all players and makes the game less controlled; moreover there are several activity cards that help the player to improve their actions, but there already were the extension tiles for that! The market allow players to buy some resources, but this eases some aspects of the game. THis expansion is something that you can definitely do without.

2019-05-30 Initial Rating: 7.0 (May 2019) I love Altiplano, so every expansion and promo card is a must have for me. After having played Altiplano: The Traveler, I can say it is a good expansion and a great addition to the game. Altiplano: The Traveler´s rues can be explained under 4 minutes if you are familiar with the base game´s rules. The game components are good as is the art. Altiplano: The Traveler adds new options to play the game and I like them all. It also add 1 new house card, 1 new boat card, 3 order cards and 1 new mission card. The new additions are: • It adds events that occur at the beginning of each turn. The events appear at random and I dislike this part a bit, however they affect all players equally. Now it can be very important to keep money to use on the events. Some of the events change a rule for the turn and others have an immediate effect. Some of the events are very powerful and I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about them, still they are a nice addition to the game. • It adds a traveler that is going to move during the game, if you are at the same location with the traveler you have access to other actions (traveler actions). • You can now buy asset cards, this is a traveler action and you can get powerful cards that change the rules in some way. These cards are not chosen at random, you look through the available assets and pick one. They are very expensive as you need to give up completely a valuable resource and I’m not sure if they are 100% balanced. The asset that allows you to move without paying food IS incredibly powerful. I need more plays to verify this point. This is the biggest addition to the game. There are many asset cards in 2 levels and they really change how the game is played. • You can now buy opals (a new resource) with normal resources. This is a traveler action. The opals will give you VPs at the end of the game, but they also serve to get the resources your opponents paid for their asset cards. You can never buy back the resources you used to pay for your own asset cards. Also, some of the events add resources to be bought by opals. This new way to obtain resources, change the game a lot as it allows you to get resources that were impossible to get any other way for you. Bottom line, Altiplano: The Traveler is a good addition to the game. It adds new options to explore with very few new rules. In particular, I like the asset cards as they change the game a lot. I want to play with it again ASAP. The expansion helps to differentiate the game even more from Orleans which is great for players who own both games. Altiplano: The Traveler makes the game´s decisions harder to process, but I love this. It´s not a "must have" expansion, but fans of the game will probably like it. Current Rating: 7.5

I've only played with the events and the short game variant, but these improved the experience to me. Altiplano is a fairly opaque game, so I don't know that I'd want to add the assets immediately, but maybe just the traveler and opals to make it more flexible. Traveler feels like 65% of it is fixing problems with the base game, in my opinion.
