Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Great expansion for those looking to play through the events in the books. I found this a good place to start.

Divested myself of all LotR:CG. Just too fiddly and too difficult (even on Easy mode). Shame. Art is amazing, encounter deck is clever. I haven't played the quests yet. But... The player cards are a lot of fun because they work so well together. The cards are based around the mechanic "When you engage an enemy with a higher engagement cost than your threat level, [some effect]." It's something different, and fun to play. AND... Fantasy Flight Games really hit a home run with me by including a Core + Black Riders suggested decklist. This allows a novice deckbuilder like me to jump right into the game WITHOUT requiring fifteen different adventure packs. And because it uses about half Core cards, half the deck feels familiar and comfortable when playing. AND... The Hobbit deck suggested in the rules plays well outside the Black Riders's quests - I know because so far I've only used the deck to play Shadows of Mirkwood. MARCH 2014: Now digging into the first quest. Tough, but fun. I hope to get the value to $1/play, and it's looking very good. I already have 5 plays on the first scenario. I think I could get 30-50 plays out of just adventures in this box.
