Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

In terms of source material, I’m definitely in the target demographic: classic 2000ad reader. I mostly play euro games, but do like card play and tactical play...and have wanted to play a skirmish game for ages, but have been put off by the dice rolling of other games in this category. Initial game was interesting, understood the rules without understanding how best to play, second game a little more understanding and by the third game, things had ‘clicked’. Iconography is clear and consistent, turns progress quickly, decisions can be satisfyingly painful and the setting shines through. A good game, one that is different from anything else I own, but definitely one I enjoy.

Martin Wallace surprises again with this design. I haven't played Wildlands, but I really enjoy this. That being said, I think it would really be a whole different animal with 3 or 4 players. This is a more stripped-down Unmatched with tighter hand management, and it's a blast.

A skirmish game that, sadly, overstays its welcome a bit and is not always as climactic as I would want it to be. Theme (artwork/story/...) 1.25/2 Gameplay (smooth play/player interaction/strategy&tactics/depth) 3.75/5 Fun factor (can you afford a smile during play?) 2.5/3
