This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.

Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration.Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.

The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

A couple of notes from our first play: - It uses a large analysis component and bolts on top of that the location selection piece with a Keyflower-style bid (except being outbid hurts more). The difference here is that there doesn't really seem to be a particular value to certain locations (which would generate more competition to showing up at a place). Someone claimed the keys early, and never let go of them, but that was largely ok because we only used two whistles. Late game, you start to see more as you say "ok, I have bits ABC and D, and I think I'll get E at this location over here" and someone else goes through the same logic. That was rare though. - The game is solitary in so far as you're largely not tracking each other so much as you spend the vast majority of the game scribbling stuff down. That was a slog, and as one of our friends put it "ok, so you look like you have a game out, but you sound like you're doing English Lit homework..." and I think that's sort of true; a large part of the game is really just combating HTI and understanding what details gain prominence. The later bit is fine, the former is tedious on occasion. *Afterward* though, it's a flurry of activity and discussion as you pack up the game. I think the lack of discussion during is born out of the win conditions being setup for a solitary win. So it comes off as an odd experience (not good or bad, just what it is). Overall, I'd play a few more cases, but I don't think I'd buy it. Initial rating; a 6. (will re-rate after 3 more cases) edit: downgraded.

One of the best (if not the best) multiplayer detective problem solving games ever. Box shows normal wear. Contents are 100% and excellent condition. Category 2-b trade (medium interest, medium size)

Better 3 than 2 players. Played with 2 people. No rule modification for 2 player game, so game was not as interesting because no competition. May be better with 5 playesr. No replayability. Very quiet. Story was kind of like an actual Sherlock Holmes case, but not as cool as the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories. New version coming out with co op and solo Variant: 3 player: all locations have two marker tokens(chits or dice) on them. When a player leaves the location they remove one of the tokens and discard from the game. When all tokens are removed from the location a police hat is automatically placed on the location. (Players do not start with police token.) Game ran long, because I took more time taking notes. Can introduce a timer mechanism - first person done can flip the timer. When timer runs out all pens must be placed down.
