Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Looks lovely but it's mostly pretty boring and an AP player turned this into a gaping yawn fest during my only play, which I admit is not neccessarily a fault of the game but the experience has not left me wanting to give this another chance anytime soon. One of my most pyrrhic victories in a game.
alluvian
Let me start off with a warning for those who are colorblind. This game is VERY unfriendly to colorblind people and even well sighted people playing in low light. The colors of the boats are way too similar, and the colors on the buildings does NOT match well the actual colors on the boats. We had to get markers and mark every single boat and building tile with pips 1-5 for bamboo - gold. Once that was done, they game is easy for all to play. I do think this should have been solved at the publisher though. My wife and I really like this game. This is a good thing because it itches the same place that Five Tribes does for me, but where she does NOT like five tribes (does not like the theme, the bidding and the appearances of the tiles), does like this. Having the action selection set the turn order for the next turn is GREAT fun. The two player game is in my opinion head and shoulders above Five Tribes. Although there are times you will be taking 2-4 turns in a row in the two player game, I find that multiple turns in a row make the turns EASIER to plan, not harder. The hard turn to plan for is the turn that you give control over to the opponents. The game works very well at all player counts (2-4). We did find that a four player game can end surprisingly fast if one player focuses on putting out their standard buildings.
baltruce
Much thinkier than Five Tribes(to which people compare to and for good reason). Although the two games do play and feel differently, they kind of have a few commons (djinns vs specialists namely as well as the point salad nature). They escalate differently though (Five Tribes having tons of stuff at the beginning of the game, options getting less and less as the game goes on, while Yamatai starts with so few things but ramps up by the mid of game, specialists playing such a vastly more important role that djinns in Five Tribes). It is indeed much more AP prone than Five Tribes, but that aside, it has beautiful presentation and it seems to keep suspense in terms of who won (although the final scores are not in the 200s,like Five Tribes, more in the 35s).Great game but heavier and thinkier than Five Tribes.
