Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Co-operative play encourages or requires players to work together to beat the game.
Cooperative Play
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Baladin
Stepping stone for the excellent Jagged Earth expansion. It introduces almost all the new concepts and mechanics. But while it introduces them, you have to play with Jagged Earth to find out how it can be used for spirits with vastly different playstyles. While I do not regret buying Branch & Claw, I feel like I would prefer both of them to have been merged as one expansion, instead of having this awkward smaller (yet older) brother hang around taking already sparse table and storage space.

Love the new spirits and tokens for more interesting strategies. Additional power and blight cards are also great. Dislike the event deck as it makes the game more fiddly and hard to resolve some of the events as a 4 player game. Also makes the game much longer.

If you don't own this, you probably don't miss anything. But if you own this, I don't see any reason, not to play with this expansion. It makes the game a bit more complex, but also brings in a lot of variety of game elements, that make the game even better and give ou more choices and possibilities to scale. It doesn't feel like something was cut out of the game to be made an expansion, but still it integrates so naturally, I can't imagine playing without it anymore.
