This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Games where you repeat an action (or part of an action) until you decide to stop due to increased (or not) risk of losing points or your turn.
Press your Luck
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Interactive/adversarial bidding game, requires a couple of plays to enjoy best. Full review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/2316366 The bottom line: "If you can't stand bidding games, don't appreciate heavy doses of interaction, and find it hard to deal with a tight and brutal game design, then this won't be your cup of tea. Senators isn't a game that's been made to wow you with over-the-top artwork, or to create a friendly experience where everyone pats each other on the back. It's rather a tense and challenging assignment where you'll have to keep your wits about you, play aggressively and boldly, in an effort to climb ahead of your opponents. But let's face it, isn't that exactly what success in the high circles of ancient Rome was all about? This game does a wonderful job of recreating some of that tension, with the help of multiple different auctions, and a challenge to manage your finances and take your chances. For many gamers who love pure auction games, and who enjoy the thrill of a tight economy combined with some brutal interaction, this will be gaming nirvana."

Really clever auction title. Like many of my favorite titles, the key to doing well in this relies on insight rather than pure calculation. The semi-closed economy rewards a certain type of economic thinking - how to price cards, how much an action is worth, how much leverage a difference in funds means, snowball effects, etc. Yet it isn't stuffy or obtuse, the random effects of the event deck keep things sufficiently obfuscated that players can stay in the flow state. More or less, to me this feels like a lighter and "partier" version of The Estates. And I'm always happy to have more of that in my gaming rotation.

I found this one to be pretty mediocre. The auctions were mildly amusing but the event deck was brutal and the abrupt ending felt very unsatisfying.
