Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I've played this about 4-5 times since it's release. I think it is a fantastic game with a really innovative method of player interaction. It feels like there are multiple routes to do well, improve your number of actions, and find a strategy to succeed. There can be some really good synergies between mandate(?) tiles to find a route to victory. I don't love the temple track that if you don't hit the top, you lose. But it does put a good sense of urgency to the game and I don't think I've ever seen someone not get to the top. It is a game that I'll be happy to play if someone recommends it, but I usually am not the one to do so. It's a fun game with a good puzzle that I'm happy to play most of the time.

Gùgōng: Deluxe edition received Nov '18. After two plays, this is very good instead of great. Therefore, if you already own a large number of euro-games, you're probably best to stick with your favourites. However, for the rest of us, this one is produced well and offers a lot of different choices while playing. In a way, this satisfies that "I don't know what to play" itch, as long as you don't want anything too deep, long, or complex. The fun is in making the decisions that are in response to the plays made before your own. This would score higher if its theme felt deeper.
