This War of Mine: The Board Game
45m - 120m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 18+
In Action Point (AP) Allowance System games, each player is allotted a certain amount of points per round. These points can be spent on available actions, until the player does not have enough remaining to "purchase" any more actions.
Action Point Allowance System
Co-operative play encourages or requires players to work together to beat the game.
Cooperative Play
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Games where you repeat an action (or part of an action) until you decide to stop due to increased (or not) risk of losing points or your turn.

Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Great game, worth more than a 7 mechanically speaking. But the theme is brutal and the outcomes often depressing. As a result, this just can't hit the table too regularly.

3 plays - 3p I love Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game, and this game felt like a huge expansion of the survival part of DoW, with realistic zombies (i.e. fellow desperate human beings). Awesome experience, we played 2 chapters and amazingly did not die yet because of lucky circumstances. Before playing I thought I would dislike this game because of high levels of randomness (explaining why I passed on the crowdfunding campaign), but it turns out out to be an abrasive optimization game. I'll definitely be interested in playing it again if given the opportunity.

As a game, it's pretty good. I'd imagine that high-level play takes the same general lines: get another person, find a hatchet to guard the door, build a bed, make a food engine, etc. Stumbling into something that works (and then repeating it every time) is fun but it's sad to say "I guess I'll never build X" when it feels like there's a lot there. Obviously the decisions are super tight and its easy to lose, so the decisions made on top of that are still pretty interesting. The story is very engaging. The writing/vignettes in the book are okay, but actually going through the actions and internalizing the consequences of bad thing snowballing is thematically powerful. My favorite play (and first win) involved Zlata slowly fixing her guitar over the game and then, on the last night, with enough food, the team holed up in the house to wait for the end. We flipped the letter that had her play guitar, raising one character's depression in a way that changed his conclusion (instead of wandering off lost, he opened a car shop, I believe). It was one of the loveliest plays of a game I've ever had. Interesting Decisions: 4/5 Fun: 3/5 Flow: 4/5 Interactivity: 4/5 Tail: 4/5 Presentation: 6/5 Overall: 8.3/10
