Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

TheNameWasTaken
(Rating based on one 2-player game) I'd probably dig this game if I wasn't already familiar with the North Star take on the Evolution system, but that take exists so I can't really ignore it. There are two crucial things that NSG added that I miss here. One is the concept of population - in the NSG games a predator attack just loses you one population, but here it instantly wipes out your entire species. And two is the win condition - the NSG games base your score on how you have been doing all game (specifically how much food you've consumed), but this one only scores you for the species that survive to the end. I could deal with not having one or the other, but the combination makes this a bit too cutthroat for me - a single carnivore attack on the last round can wipe out like half of your score in a way you maybe can't possibly prevent due to turn order. Lest this become just griping on NSG vs Rightgames, I should also say that the area cards (which, as I understand, are the new thing added by this specific version) are a wonderful idea! Locking some of the food supply behind specific traits is great both thematically and mechanically, and the shelter tokens are a really clever thing too. I also like the variety of traits and I enjoy the idea of discardable traits. The fact that there are two traits on each card definitely helps with draw luck (although it is a bit strange visually). But I do so hate the parasite trait. The fact that there is no real defense against that just doesn't sit right with me.

I know all the games that the Evolution-Family has to offer and it all began with the original from Rightgames. That game was a fun and mean game, that couldn't reach it's full potential. However, as a small box game, it was fine. When the new Evolution entered the ring, it was superior in all aspects and it's still a great game today. A few expansion and similar games followed, but none of them did a better job. Now we get yet another version which is alot closer to the original. Actually so close that it didn't evolve much. Instead it kept the problems from the original without adding new twists on it's own. In the original, you rolled a die to add more food. Here you draw a card that shows food. There was only 1 scoring at the end, which was the worst part of it and this one works the same... wtf?! Sorry, but coming up with a new version of an old game without any development is already a bad idea. Adding in that there is already a really great updated version makes it even worse. The only good thing left is the art, as the core of the game already evolved into a much better game years ago.
