Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Pretty fun game, excellent puzzle, super complicated. I think I enjoy the simplicity of Omega Centauri better, but not having every single technology available every play makes each play a lot different here in Voidfall. Thumbs up for that.

A few plays deep now and I think this game is fantastic. Yes the setup and teach are a bear, but this really does live up to, and in my opinion exceeds, the promise of a heavy space 4x euro. The economy is an excellent puzzle full of trade offs. The combat is fast and easy, an area which often bogs down proper 4x games. There is some incentive to fight, but not a huge amount. I don't really consider this a huge knock though, because the threat is still there, and there are plenty of other more combat focused games. The real star is the techs, each game can feel radically different depending on which techs are available. Different factions all play very differently and the agenda cards DIY approach to a points engine is the icing on the cake. I got this game to be my go to big heavy euro, and it ticks that box brilliantly. Worth noting that I have the retail edition, with the extra ships and double layer player boards. The extra boards fit in the core box, so this monster actually doesn't take up too much space.
