12/1/23 4-had high hopes for this but the scoring is so fiddly and difficult for a game that should be breezy and quick. The puzzle is engaging but the resolution is infuriating to attempt

After 10 solo plays I think this one is better than Trails of Tucana, because it features more variety in the gameplay. Yes, luck plays a major role, yes, it can be swingy, but in Trails of Tucana I realized I could do the same thing over and over, and getting the highest scoring tier or not depended mostly on the random fluctuations of the card draw. Here, the end result is much more unpredictable and you must adapt to what is given to you. If you think you need to draw crossings to win, or you need to house rule the game to allow for that, don't be mistaken: the starting tiles are already crossroads and you don't need much more to get a very high score. So I think this is a beautiful twist on the previous design. They are two very different games in the end and this one is less approachable than the former. But when it starts to click and you start scoring big, it's even more enjoyable. I have a few cons though. The set-up randomization feels needlessly convoluted (I ditched the fish cards and place the starting tiles at random now). The graphic design is terrible. The game is both ugly to look at and hard to parse. Finally, the "flavor text" that comes with the scoring tiers is antagonizing and weird. Solo, this plays quite fast (much faster than the 30 minutes advertised).
