Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Voting allows players to influence the outcome of certain events within the game. The vote may be all or nothing, choosing a target for an effect, or to determine the results of certain situations. Players’ votes may not have equal weight, and blocking a player from voting can be a valid tactic.
Voting
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

19 Feb 23: Fun first play with L and M. Although we were just pulling levers and pressing buttons to see what happens in the game, there were still meaningful decisions to be made and it was fun making them. Each action is not that complex to execute and you roughly know what would happen if you did something. The only parts that were harder to grok were in making the right deals with others in order to gain a better position in something; and in my opinion the hardest rules to handle were the events in India and the elephant march. Otherwise it was really fun pushing and shoving each other in the game to get into the more influential positions in the company and forcing the company to do things for your own selfish benefits. Cant wait to play it again, this time with a bit more strategy and knowledge in making better deals. 9/10 for now, based on a single play of the 1710 scenario.

OCT 2022 This game works as a simulation of the colonization of India by the British but isn't a compelling complex strategy game. You'll mostly be grappling with the system and dice rather than other players. This is mostly because there isn't that much you can do to affect the game state. Your agency is dependent on you having a position of authority and if you have funding in your department which can be an interesting problem but not fun one. The game mostly plays itself but it needs to in order to be a detailed simulation. This is the first game in my 14 years in the hobby that I felt the "cones of dunshire" meme was appropriate. The rules explanation seemed to never end and was absurdly expansive. Hilarious.

Very thinky game with lots of diplomacy that makes players have to be both friend and foe navigating a terrible time in history.
