War of the Ring: The Card Game
90m - 120m
2 - 4 Players
Ages 12+
The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

This is an excellent adaptation of a phenomenal game. However, there are a few reasons I wouldn't recommend it over the original. It is pretty long as well but not as thematic as the original. It can have a player feeling shut out earlier on in the game due to bad draws and suboptimal plays (which makes the game feel more scripted in how you should play). But it is an excellent substitute for 4 players and if all are fans of the LOTR, this is a no brainier. I don't recommend it at any other player count though as lower player counts suffer from having a mixed deck and creates more luck dependance on having cards you can play to certain battlefields.

This game is great, I really enjoy playing each of the factions and all of the scenarios. I hope they make some expansions.

Simply one of the best card game i played in my life. The gameplay is smooth, the LotR feeling is strong, every decision is tough, the manipulation of every 30 card deck is brilliant. A lot of things happens in The Trilogy, but “in time” you have to be ready with the right troops or character to make the difference in a specific battleground or path. Epic. Hope. Loss. All-in-120-cards-2-hours-game. Ian Brody knows his job.
