Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Big B
Man talk about a gorgeous, A+ production. My barometer for cooperative games tends to boil down to: 1) is it as good or better than Pandemic? 2) would I choose to play it over Pandemic? The answer to the first is no, it's doesn't seem to have quite as many complexities as Pandemic and I'm not wild about how many spaces comes down to dice rolling. But the puzzle is good enough, with a helping of theme and great art, to choose this over Pandemic from time to time.

 [BGCOLOR=#FFFF33]Solo win condition:[/BGCOLOR]: Build the 9 components and power core to rescue the Atlanteans before the island is lost to the sea. This game is very visually appealing and I enjoy the components and theme of saving people in trouble. I find the true 1 counselor solo too difficult at present and have a list in docs of possible house rules to try to give me a fighting chance until I improve. Lesson learned: Sometimes a house rule or playing with more than one character (even solo) can make a game that isn't working for me work again... and be really enjoyable. The playmat is really cool because it makes it seem like the island is sinking. Would like to have it. What is it about? The island of Atlantis is sinking due to the wrath of the "gods". You are trying to save the people. What do I like about it? The components are fantastic. The way the island gradually disappears as it is "sinking". It is a co-op. It is thematic. What do I not like about it? The game is easier the more players you have. The huge misfortune deck means that you will only see a small portion of the cards each game. Therefore, depending on the luck of the shuffle, you may have a really easy time or a really difficult time. Replayability: Huge. Different counselors to choose, different cards come up in the misfortune and library deck, and you can choose different combinations of 9 components. Verdict: I really like it (for now) and will play many more times before I consider letting it go. Rating: 8.65/10 Number of players: 1-7 Time to play (in minutes): 60-120 BGG Weight: 2.45 Solo mode: Official. A beautiful game, but it’s kind of limited after you experience the tight ending once or twice. The character powers don’t give as much variety as in Pandemic. I’d rather play Pandemic for a lightweight, tense co-op experience basically.
