Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

This expansion does a couple things to change the gameplay. It adds in new cards that help flesh out more faction bonuses. It replaces the top green and orange actions, changing what players do with spice. It adds in a new action area to by technology upgrades and dreadnaughts (warships) as a way of spending spice and Solari. All in all it upgrades slightly the base game and elevates without being overly burdensome with new mechanics which is appreciated.

A great expansion for a great game. I wouldn't say that D:I had any real flaws. But this expansion A) Fixes the weaknesses in D:I I would never have noticed without it and B) Adds a lot to the game without being overbearing. It replaces the few 'boring' spaces of the base game with new, very interesting spaces. Tech and Shipping feel right at home, both gameplay and flavour wise. The economy changes a lot through this, somehow making all currencies more valuable! The cards added are sublime. Excellent choices offered, without powercreeping the base game. Same can be said about the new leaders (although Duke Ecaz seems very, very strong). The optional "epic" game mode is also a very nice option, I wouldn't always play D:I that way, but it's great variety and I like both modes of play greatly. Would never play D:I without this again. IMO *the* perfect expansion.

Dreadnaughts and Tech, makes the game feel more open with strategies for sure. A definite value adder to the base game and not a ton of difficult changes above the base game either to make it harder to play.
