The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – Revised Core Set
30m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 14+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

At first I loved playing this game solo, as challenging as it was, but then my wife and I started playing together and WOW this game is everything we could have hoped! It's tense, exciting and really engaging. We love the amount of conversation and interaction required, and each victory feels truly momentous. It FEELS like The Lord of the Rings in all the best ways!

Theme holds a greater appeal to me than Arkham Horror LCG. And I found it somewhat easier to learn than AH, perhaps because I played that game first. But I find the core scenarios to be so much less engaging and fun compared to AH. I may be giving up too quickly with this game, but I'd rather put my energy (and $$$) into AH, as well as the more straightforward Marvel Champions. I can see why some people love this game, and the idea of playing the saga expansions is attractive. A disappointment, but it's just not for me. Update (12-28-23): My mea culpa. This is the first game I’ve sold, and then later repurchased. I always had a nagging feeling that I gave up too early on this game. After reading reviews and watching various videos in the year or so after selling the core set, I decided to give it another chance. And I’m very happy I did. I find the play of this LCG somewhere between Marvel Champions and Arkham Horror LCG. It doesn’t have the strong narrative of Arkham, but for me it’s more thematic than Marvel Champions. I’m looking forward to playing the repackaged expansion sets for a long time to come.

Unexpected suprise. True solo works great, even though it can get a bit fiddly with all of those tokens. Games are about 30min long, so I guess it's a great alternative to Arkham LCG, maybe even better.
