Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

The art and story pulled me in and the first few plays are full of exploring and wonder, after resetting the third or fourth time it devolves into each player piggybacking in the same direction so you can maximize your distance travelled and ignoring everything until you get to new tiles and try to find a way out. The gameplay really sours this game for me, it whittles down this expansive world to riding on a predetermined track that you must go down. Sure you can explore different ways out but the wonder and awe of the game are quickly extinguished by the sheer limited number of unique actions you get to take before everything resets. Feels like you are running through the motions and not playing a game. Really the only redeeming qualities of this game are the beautiful art and theme.

Unless I am getting some rule wrong some where, each game is very lethal... It ended up being a game of memory trying to remember previous playthroughs and just going where I remembered to go since getting info again would leave resources too scarce to actually complete a run. Also 100% of the time I had the option to rest, it would result in the nightmare reaching me and gaming me over so I couldn't even take advantage of that mechanic.

OK, this is not exactly a "game", so much as a solo story exploration/puzzle. I'm not sure what tips it over the line into not-game for me, but it does. I will try it again with the expectation it is what it is, but it may also fall into the "iterated play" model which I'm not fond of. But, i'll give it another shot as an interactive story.
