Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

All in all, I don't feel this is a necessary expansion but it's inexpensive & brings several little details that you must manage/pay attention to - upping the challenge slightly. If you love FORT & are looking to spice things up, this expansion does just that. The cards are super cute.

It introduces more ways to mess with others and opens up new viable paths to score points. In the base game when someone had a clear lead often the game was already lost. With cats and dogs it seems things can swing quite a bit still. I find this much more exciting and would actually hope that future expansions double down on that. Overall, I think you still need to play this game too often with the same group for there to be clear strategies to combat runaway leaders. A few more avenues to score points would make for a more diverse and rich experience

We found that the dogs clogged up our starting deck and slowed the game down considerably! But the cats are a fun small addition to the game.
