GROUP AVERAGE: 5.56 / 10 Bryle: 5.25 Chung: 5 Sixtus: 6 Mario: 6 Considering the industry titans attached to Maharaja, I was surprised by how middling and forgettable our experience was. While Maharaja’s redesign delivers some modern sensibilities, mechanically the game feels fairly recycled and non-distinct. Maharaja provides strong decisions, but narrows its focus too sharply within its monotonous building system. Maharaja's would greatly benefit by giving players more paths to victory and agency over game states. I'd also like to see more inherently interesting actions that build palpable tension between players and their majorities.

This is a remake of Maharaja: A Game of Palace Building in India, which I played once many years ago. I liked it and wanted to play again so it was nice to play this version. I found it worked pretty well and I'm not sure I remember enough about the original to compare. But based on what I do remember, I think I liked the original better because I believe there was more planning and pieces within the control of the players.
