The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I've only played this solo, and while it's perfect for family gaming, this is a real solitaire challenge. The artwork from Tristam Rossin is gorgeous, and the components are terrific. Henry Audobon's solo mode design can be maddening in both the best and worst ways. The replenishing line of monsters can feel relentless, and the King's Guard is a difficult obstacle to overcome. When you can put together an attacking combo to defeat multiple monsters in one turn, it's very satisfying, but you can easily be totally blocked from the Forest without enough turns to restock on items and keep the monster line from reaching four by the end of your turn. I like the idea behind this game very much, but I think the solo mode might need some work because a disadvantageous random setup of the different locations can make it almost impossible to progress fast enough through them to reach the Forest in time, especially with the other Guild members and the King's Guard blocking the way. While I can't personally verify this yet, I suspect that the multiplayer mode might be a better playing experience. I'll definitely revisit Kingswood, though, to keep exploring what the solo mode has to offer.

Solo mode is awesome but hard. A victory feels really well deserved after a tough battle. 2 player mode makes a light and quick filler. Perfect for after a longer game. The kickstarter version contains "the docks" as a special location card. I never play without it, it makes the game more repayable in my opinion.

A light, fast-playing, almost meaningless game. Get some coins, buy some icons, use icons to fight. No tension or too many interesting choices. The rondel system is quite nice. How the turns work is good. What you do in the game is the problem. It's not enough. There's essentially 4 actions in the game and it's not fun to repeat them. Get gold. Buy icon. Refresh icons. Fight monsters. All icons function the same way. It's not like one is more rare or expensive than the others. The unique player powers are nice. The "random" board setup is laughable, when playing with 5 of the 6 locations the same in each game. The random one is still too similar. There's no variety in the game.
