Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Been waiting for the Kickstarter since Winter came out. Checked the prototype out at Essenspiel and it looks beautiful, with the Elven uprising expansion (for both Winter and Spring) it is only getting better.
Ravenstein
A good-looking game that also is a lot of fun to play. My boys (11 and 13 years old) like it a lot and so do I.

First play of the core game was a total hit with my wife. The mechanics seemed to work very well together. We had to elect the winner by comparing excess resources! I have a strong feeling that the rating will rise after a few plays... Rating for now: 8 ----------- Second 2 player game: I got pretty badly destroyed. I lost by 7 or 8 victory points - BUT, it was fun nevertheless. There are really a lot of tactical decisions to be made during the game. A really satisfying gameplay. :) Upped to 8.5 One bigger problem is: the scattered rules and no player aid. If you play with the expansions, it can be that you have to look for monster/fairie/elven abilities in three rulebooks and the two cards for the Legendary Expansion. I´ll have to make a player aid with all vital rules to enjoy the game more, so that I don´t have to browse through the rules that often and search for just one little info. I´m already 3D printing cards and parts holders for a quicker setup and teardown and to get at least the Enchanted Forest expansion in the main box. The actual state of the box already looks pretty good. By the way: if all cards of the main box are sleeved (only standard sleeves!), they don´t fit in the designated compartment anymore...
