Rating represent the difference with the FFG version, not the gameplay itself. Gameplay is fine, but the overall package is lacking. A lot of missed design opportunities that were already present in previous versions.

A classic that gets extra rating points for including a 2-player duel version along with lots of plastic blobs.

I appreciate this is an older design, but boy I think this thing is wildly unwieldy. I knew it would feel scripted, but I wasn't expecting just how juggling so many different factions with differing objectives (and the those can change round to round) not to mention a bunch of addendums and special rules, means everyone has their nose in their player aids most of the game. I can't imagine knowing the game enough to remember what everyone is going for without constantly looking things up. Admittedly, the theme does come through, it's pretty cool how much the historical lesson comes through, and the simple area control is fun. But it's hard to call it a good game by many contemporary standards in my opinion. Not something I'd recommend. Upon further reflection I don't love how the population mechanic forces you to fight (very random) battles. Makes sense from a thematic standpoint, but not very satisfying strategically at times and is one more way it forces you to follow script.
