Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

This is a very beautiful introductory RPG with a funny, unique storyline, but there are significant problems with it. The materials provided for the gamemaster are so spread out its hard to keep track of all the information you need to keep track of and the system is so barebones it feels kind of directionless for the other players (which is made even worse if the gamemaster misses important information because of the formatting of the story materials). It was fun to an extent, but also quite frustrating.

I personally really love this game. You can tell this is a passion project by the designer and a lot of work and care went into it. Gorgeous art and amazing pop-up environments. But it isn't a game for everyone. The storyteller has a bit of a job to wrangle and steer things - very much a Gamemaster lite. The important detail on the back of the cards is a cute idea, but in practice, I can't do a set-up that lets me read it while players can also closely inspect what they see. Also, not everything they can see is listed. For example, 1st playthrough, player said "I use the tongs". I'm like "uh...you don't have any...yet (hint hint)" knowing they are in a cupboard they haven't searched. And they respond, "I pick up the ones right next to the fireplace". And I'm like, what? Sure enough, there are tongs right in plain view for them. Anyway...what I recommend for the Storyteller is taking pictures of the fronts and backs. That way you can look as closely as you need to and see what they see. Also...I recommend this game! For people that like immersive stories with low to no real "failures".

Good with the kids and family, definitely must have more than 2 players otherwise it will be extremely boring and lite. You need a Story Teller (DM) that has the patience and the commitment to prepare ahead of the team getting together so he/she can make the experience better and less obvious for the adults. So far the stories have been very easy to solve so unless you improvise, throw in complications, and other creative ways to make it more challenging to the players it can be too easy for the puzzle solving minded player that is looking for more of a challenge. I haven't played all the expansions and all the episodes yet. Will update if it gets bettter.
