Tammany Hall
90m - 90m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding

I hate blind bidding, screw-you mechanics, playing kingmaker, turtling, leader bashing, unfair turn order advantages, and having an opponent assign special abilities for me! Sometimes I like player chaos, but I did not like it here. Definitely not my kind of game.

I enjoy area control games, specially the euroish style of area control games and Tammany Hall is a very unique piece in this category. This is enough just to win some rating, sum that to a very great and beautifully designed game, you have Tammany Hall. In this game we control chiefs of influence all over New York and spread our influence over the immigrants from 4 nations that come to live in New York. It is a great game with a good artwork.

Great Game. The perfect game for my group of friends. Simple ideas and easy to learn. Decent Depth. Win by outwitting, bluffing, and backstabbing the other players. Tammany Hall can be a very social fun game with players who are comfortable with messing around with each other. Definitely more fun with everyone on an about equal skill level. Easy Personal 10 for me. My group loves it and I love it. We'll be playing this game for a long time. I think what makes this game played over and over with my group is that everyone feels like they can win next time. And that they only lost because of their own misplay. Or that they can outwit their opponents next time. It is similar to the draw that high strategy + high luck games have. Players who win believe it was all because of their strategy and players who lose feel they lost because of bad luck. In this case players can easily feel that a slight adjustment to their strategy or election bidding could have made them the winner instead. edit: The game has cooled a lot over time. The auctions of Keyflower has scratched a similar itch and essentially replaced Tammany Hall despite being a drastically different game. Adjusting my rating to an 8 since playing many more games since the time of my initial rating.
