Beautiful game design. At its core, the game may not be quite as strong as its design implies, but its still really good and easy to learn and teach.

Area control is not one of my favorite mechanisms, but I figured since it was K&K it was worth a shot. Each turn you build the board out with tiles that you can later claim by spending money and possibly resources. Once the tiles are all out on the board, the players also have an option to draw an end game tile bringing the game closer to the end on their turn. Ultimately you are using your keys to gain money from a district, and then place that key onto a building for control. In addition to the area control element which is pretty standard fare, there is a bonus track around the board that offers a player either a resource or point bonus. The trick with these bonuses is while you can move forward to any bonus you want, you can never move backwards to get a bonus you passed over previously. It's a fun spin on acquiring end game points. For me Paris sits in an odd spot, it's easy to teach and play, but the game just lacks a certain fun factor for me. Maybe it's the area control, but I also worry the lack of variability would see me focused on doing the same few things each game. Lastly, I must say that Game Brewer did an absolutely amazing job with the deluxe edition, the components are simply fantastic!

After 1 play (2p): This is a pretty neat game. The importance of some aspects of the game play do not reveal themselves until it is, perhaps, a little too late (especially if this is your first play). In particular, the importance of placing the 4th key in a district to control where the next scoring tile is placed is hugely important. If you are not able to control this scoring, some of your districts may never score. Because of how this mechanism works, the game scaled really well to the 2p count (which I was a little bit worried about at first). I love how you can climb up from building to building within a district. The bonus tiles are hugely important but are not available on the higher scoring buildings. So, planning on how to take the smaller buildings, then taking control with the larger buildings later is a lot of fun...so is figuring out how to stop others from doing the same. The game certainly feels like it plays in two different halves. The first half, where buildings are still being placed and the second half, where you are jostling for position on the now established board. This are a lot of subtleties to this game that require some patience, cunning, and the right timing. I'm looking forward to my next play.
