Rise of Tribes (Mammoth Edition + (Expansion)
30m - 60m
2 - 4 Players
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

I don’t think this is worth the MSRP but it is definitely a fun area majority game if you can get it on clearance. The event aspect is probably one of the best parts with mammoths and volcanos shaking up the map. I like the variable map setup which is relevant for resources and goal cards. The goal cards seemed a little to easy to get and a little luck driven if you get the one you need at the right time. I’d rather not see so many open goals out and have a hand limit. One majority issue with our copy was mold on some of the wood pieces which we haven’t experienced before and I plan to reach out to the publisher and hope they make it right. The game itself is light but there is a nice balance between needing to expand and protecting what you own. Combat is super simple by removing meeple’s 1:1 until there is one player left remaining. I appreciate the advanced version that adds player powers and advanced tiles in the box so you can play with beginners or add a bit more complexity and strategy into the mix when ready. The art is incredible and components are pretty decent quality. The dice mechanism is interesting because sometimes you get a boosted action and sometimes reduced and there is some strategy in leaving dice in less then ideal locations for your opponents next move. This game could play fast if you all keep it pretty solitaire and playing for cards and holding onto a village most of the game. Or you can be pretty aggressive in which case it will take longer as you need to deprive your opponents their resources, villages, or tiles they need to complete objectives. There could be a runaway leader issue because of well protected villages and the other players having to keep throwing people trying to take it down while it is much easier to keep guarded.

Surprising depth yet very simple, every game has been fast and fun so far. Much more strategic than you'd think at first glance. Whatever randomness is very well balanced by the mechanics, it never feels unfair to roll badly, you can always make up for it in cleverness. Wow.

Rise of Tribes is terrific for so many reasons. It's lightweight enough for even non-gamers to pick up and play with maybe 10 minutes of rules explanation beforehand, but still meaty enough to be satisfying. Once everyone understands how to play, you can usually get through even a 4p session in 45 minutes. The event tiles add a ton of variety, making every game a new experience. Highly recommended!
