Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

This is a clear rework of Wallace's prior design Field of Glory card game, but with some questionable revisions. Gone is the army drafting phase of the game - which I liked, but I can understand the appeal of pre-built armies of particular character (the armies include two types of Romans, Ancient Britons, Alexandrine Macedonians, Persians, and Carthaginians). Combat values are now distinguished for attack and defense, and overall costs to deploy are reduced. A very big change is that the required bonus card in combat will be of no help at all unless it is one of your Leaders, about a quarter of your deck. This means top-decking instead of committing a card from hand has a poor chance of helping, which really changes the bluff aspects of the game. Another major change is there is no set ending time - in FOG the games only went until both sides reshuffled twice, but now armies can fight eternally until the battlefield is won. Sadly, Bill and I fought ourselves to a standstill where we each had 2 of the 5 columns needed to win, but had too few units left to break through for victory. Since leaders are never killed, we were down to a couple units each and our full complement of leaders every turn, and the game plunged into the ridiculous. We called it quits rather than continue the farce. The game is not irredeemable - I would play again but only with a house rule that ends play after a certain number of reshuffles. The guts of the game are fine, and play as well as FOG with a little more individual character.

Fast and neat small wargame-like condensed in a card game. Some people complain about the very thin theme, stating that this is a generic card game. I think instead that the designer successfully translate the basic concepts of an ancient battle into a very balanced card game with a very good result. Suggested!

What a great little game. Nice and easy mechanics to get the game moving, but subtle strategies to be utilised.
