Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

X-Men and Fantasy Flight? How could you go wrong? Somehow they did. Someone else described this as a glorified version of Yahtzee and that hits the nail on the head. I wanted to love this game and I’m probably a little too easy on board game ratings in general, so for me to rate this a 2 says a lot. The art and the concept were there, but the Assist mechanic is wasted. Almost every turn it was more valuable for me to keep my Assist card for the dice than to give it away to another player. Also, our team kept the Threat Level in the green, sometimes at 1, the entire game and there was never any tension. But when we got to the final showdown, we all got wiped out on a single turn. We looked in the rule book to see if we played something wrong, but nope. Apparently this reimplements Elder Sign, which I love, but I would’ve never known had I not seen it on a BGG post. Just a poorly-executed game and a waste of good art and a great IP.

Much like Arkham Horror 3rd edition, this game adds great thematic elements and tweaks some gameplay elements for the better vs its spiritual predecessor (in this case Elder Sign.) In putting the game on rails and tweaking mechanics, it also streamlines away much of what makes Elder Sign special.

I love that you can choose between many x-men heroes as main character and a huge veriety of allies. I like the dice deployment elements that came from past successful board games. I like the difficulty scale and that It has a unique co-op system between players.
