I enjoy Subtext, but some players have real trouble wrapping their heads around the concept. If your group likes both drawing and deception games, get Subtext.

Dixit meets Pictionary, but closer to Dixit with drawing your own clues instead of playing a card.. I think after 1 play I do enjoy this more than Dixit and Mysterium. It's not as beautiful as those, unless you happen to be playing with a professional artist, I guess, but there is more strategy in the drawing than there is in playing a card in Dixit. Subtext is pretty unique, as are all of Wolfgang Warsch's games. I've played all his published games, and I've yet to be disappointed. I see another person says the scoring is hard to follow. If the player whose turn it is and his or her partner both correctly guess the drawing they have in common, then both get points for each person who guessed incorrectly, Everyone else who guesses correctly receives the same points: +1. Simple.

2019-07-30 Initial Rating: 7.0 (July 2019) Wolfgang Warsch is a very prolific designer but I have only played one of his games (That's Pretty Clever and I didn’t like it) so I wasn’t expecting much from Subtext, but I really liked it and I absolutely hate drawing games :D. Subtext´s rules are easy to teach, you can do it under 4 minutes. Playtime is around 60 minutes. The game´s component aren´t anything special, but they work for their intended purpose. Gameplay is very fun, even for me, a player who hates drawing games. Subtext spins the Dixit mechanisms in a fun way (not that Dixit isn’t fun, I love it). Now there are 2 players who have to draw the same thing but they don´t know they are partners, furthermore, they cannot draw the thing in an obvious manner or they won´t get any VPs, so, both players need to convey the same concept with different drawings using, well, subtext and subtlety . Every player who caught the correct pair of drawings will win as many VPs as other player´s mistakes choosing the drawings so you want to be as obscure as possible while at the same time you have to guess correctly. It´s a spin on an old idea and it´s very fun. Subtext is expensive for what comes in the box, also, the box is very big for the amount of components inside. Bottom line, I wasn’t expecting much from Subtext, but it really surprised me. Gameplay is very fun. Subtext is a fun variant of Dixit and it joins the ranks along Pictomania and A Fake Artist goes to New York as the only drawing games I can enjoy as I really hate the drawing genre. Subtext is a borderline 7.0 to me for now. Current Rating: 7.0 Jgoyes´ Awards: [imageid=5786726inline][imageid=5786749inline]
