Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management

Quest: A lot to love in this quest. The plot is very good and the mechanics of the quest implement it very well. And while there are surprises in the plot, they are fun challenges even on a first play (as opposed to the brutal "gotcha" of something line The Dunland Trap). Because this doesn't require you to tech against it very specifically, it is a good medium challenge quest that can be picked up and enjoyed with almost any deck(s). Player Cards: No real standouts here. The best cards are probably Raiment of War and Captain's Wisdom, but even they are somewhat niche. The rest are even more niche -- not necessarily bad, just only likely to turn up in a few specific decks. I want to like hero Lanwyn because she's 3 ranged attack in spirit, but even she is a niche hero for multiplayer play of quests with lots of surge. Ratings: If I were to rate any expansions to this game in the context of board/card games as a whole, they'd get an 8,9 or 10 because they are part of a game that I give a 10 to overall. However, on a separate scale within just this game system, I'd give this a 9 for the quest (continuing a strong cycle) and a 5 for the cards.

I'm fairly lukewarm on Lanwyn, though I am a primarily solo/two-handed player. I can imagine that she would shine fairly brightly in a four player game. Most of the other player cards in the pack are fairly situational (though they are incredibly good in those situations, particularly Captain's Wisdom and Sam Gamgee ally). The quest itself is a fun, two part boss battle. First against the Corsair Elite, then against a giant squid that attacks the boats mid-fight. The battle with the titular monster is one of my favorite boss battles, utilizing locations with the Grapple keyword to provide another loss condition.

Fun quest. Tentacles of "The Thing" are fun and and big challenge. The Mirkwood Explorer and Raiment of War cards helped me win the game...good cards.
